I hear a lot about oxidative stress and the damage it causes the body. Exactly what is oxidative stress and oxygen free radicals?
Oxidative stress is created by the oxygen that we breathe. The needed oxygen can turn into toxic, free compounds called “free radicals”. Oxidative stress can harm the body. However, essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals can snuff out the toxins and render them no longer harmful. Click here to learn more.
The free radicals are only harmful if they build up inside the body. Oxygen free radicals are produced either from inside the body (normal cell metabolism) or from external sources (pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, medication, etc.). When an overload of free radicals cannot gradually be destroyed, their accumulation in the body generates a phenomenon called oxidative stress or oxidative damage. This stress plays a major role in the development of chronic and degenerative illness such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
The human body counteracts oxidative damage with antioxidants, which are naturally made by the body or supplied through food. The most powerful antioxidants include vitamins A, C, and E, and the minerals, zinc and selenium. In addition, other substances found in food support antioxidant activity including: beta-carotene, and omega-3 fats. Click here to learn more.
Nutrient Complete Meals™ contain all essential nutrients including antioxidants, which directly attack free radicals and control oxidative damage. Specifically, Nutrient meals contain the vitamins A, C, and E; the minerals zinc and selenium; and omega-3 fats.
